Mission Statement

The Bill Russell Legacy Project was established to commemorate Bill Russell's achievements as the greatest champion in the history of professional sports, as a national leader in human rights as well as his contributions and impact as a mentor to youth in our community.

Mr. Russell’s legacy on and off the court will be celebrated with a statue in a location of historical significance in the city of Boston in conjunction with the Bill Russell Mentoring Grant program – a program created to ensure Russell's passion for youth development is carried on by expanding the reach and resources for quality mentoring programs in Boston.

Over One Hundred Fifty Mentors and Mentees Receive Free Celtics Tickets to the

February 15 Game against the Pistons and the Bill Russell Legacy Project will be highlighted

BOSTON (February 14, 2012) – The Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation (BCSF) is proud to team up with the Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) for the second annual Mentoring Night at TD Garden. BCSF will donate over 150 Celtics tickets to mentors and mentees from around the state. In addition to the tickets, some mentees will take part in special pre-game opportunities including the Boston Celtics High Five Kids Tunnel. Mentoring Night will also raise awareness for the Bill Russell Legacy Project, which includes a Mentoring Grant Program that will invest in Boston’s youth by awarding grants annually to local non-profit organizations to help increase the number of children in Boston who have access to quality, structured, caring adult mentoring programs.

 

“The Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation prides itself on providing life enriching experiences to local children in need,” Boston Celtics Managing Partner and President of the Shamrock Foundation Stephen Pagliuca said. “The partnership with MMP on Mentoring Night at TD Garden and the Bill Russell Mentoring Grant Program allows us to work towards fulfilling this mission, while simultaneously raising awareness to the ever increasing struggles faced by youth throughout the local community.”

 

Mentoring Night and the Bill Russell Mentoring Grant Program are expansions of the partnership between the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation and MMP, which includes an annual ticket donation program, Shamrock Dreams, where season ticket holders can donate any preseason or regular season tickets to the BCSF. Last year, Celtics season-ticket holders donated 1,463 tickets to MMP valued at over $156,000 offering matches from mentoring programs in MMP’s statewide network a unique experience.

 

“I am thrilled and thankful that the Celtics have embraced mentoring and have established this program.  Being Captain of the Celtics is one of the things I am most proud of in my career and mentoring has become my personal passion for many years,” Celtics Legend Bill Russell said. “I am very proud to be a part of this program and to be able to help make a positive impact on children in Boston.”

 

“The partnership with the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation and the Bill Russell Legacy Project will not only provide a memorable experience for mentors and mentees but will also enable us to raise public awareness around the power of mentoring and enable mentoring programs to provide more caring, adult mentors to children,” Chief Program Officer of Mass Mentoring Partnership Marty Martinez said.

 

During the game, the Celtics will present their Heroes Among Us Award to Katherine Shea a mentor with the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston. The Heroes Among Us Award is presented to an individual who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to our community.
